Ahmedabad civic body to relocate Narmada trunk line

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has discovered that a Narmada trunk water line runs beneath a commercial plot it has listed for sale in Chandkheda, making construction on the plot impossible. To resolve the issue, the civic body has decided to relocate the trunk line at a projected cost of Rs 52.9 billion. The proposal was approved during AMC’s water and sewage committee meeting held.

An AMC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained, "We are addressing a mistake made by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). In 2002-03, AUDA laid the main trunk line on land belonging to the Gujarat Housing Board. Later, the area was designated under TP Scheme No. 76/B, with a commercial plot reserved on the same land."

AMC also has a separate plan to enhance Narmada water supply to Chandkheda, Motera, Ranip, and Sabarmati. This involves laying a 2,500mm diameter pipeline from the Jaspur treatment plant to KD Hospital via Vaishnodevi Crossroads, connecting it with the 1,600mm trunk line in Chandkheda.

During this project, AMC noticed that the trunk line runs directly beneath the commercial plot listed for sale.
