POWERGRID Wins 4.5 GW Renewable Energy Transmission Project

Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has received a letter of intent from PFC Consulting to develop an interstate transmission system (ISTS) at the Kurnool-III substation in Andhra Pradesh, aimed at integrating 4.5 GW of renewable energy. The project involves augmenting the transformation capacity at the existing Kurnool-III substation, extending the C’peta substation, and constructing a 765 kV direct current transmission line.
The project will be executed on a build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) basis, covering activities like surveying, preparing a detailed project report, financing, project management, obtaining clearances, land compensation, design, engineering, equipment supply, construction, erection, testing, and commissioning. The substations and related infrastructure must remain within a 3 km radius of the area proposed in the survey report.
POWERGRID has been securing major transmission projects recently. It received letters of intent from REC Power Development and Consultancy (RECPDCL) for three projects worth Rs 107.5 billion, including power evacuation from the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Phase V, capacity augmentation at Banaskantha in Gujarat, and integration of the Kurnool-IV REZ Phase I in Andhra Pradesh.
Additionally, POWERGRID won projects from RECPDCL to establish ISTS and boost substation capacity in Gujarat and Karnataka. These include the augmentation of transformation capacity at the KPS1 and KPS2 projects in Gujarat and the Bidar substation in Karnataka, enhancing capacity by 3×500 MVA, 400/220 kV ICTs and 1×1500 MVA, 765/400 kV ICT.
In December last year, POWERGRID secured a project from RECPDCL to evacuate 8 GW of renewable energy from Gujarat’s Khavda REZ under Phase V, Part A.
