Odisha has set an ambitious goal to generate 1,000 MW of energy through floating solar projects in its reservoirs. The state aims to achieve a total of 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with approximately 7.5 GW of this target being sourced from solar energy.

Earlier, consultants were engaged to conduct a feasibility study for about 51 medium-sized reservoirs. According to NISE (National Institute of Solar Energy), and iFOREST (International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology), the state has significant potential for floating solar, with an estimated capacity of 33.5 GW across 670 square kilometres of feasible water body area.

Energy department officials have highlighted several advantages of floating solar farms, such as increased energy production, conservation of land, and improved water management. The projects not only make use of unused water surfaces in reservoirs but also enhance solar panel efficiency due to the cooling effect of water.
