Brookfield Sells 1.6 GW Renewables Portfolio to Gentari

Brookfield Asset Management has sold its 1.6 GW solar and wind portfolio in India to Gentari Renewables India in a two-phase deal. The first phase, involving the sale of 1 GW of operating assets, has been completed, marking Brookfield’s first full-cycle portfolio monetization in its renewable power and transition business in India.

The sale followed the Competition Commission of India’s approval for Gentari Renewables to acquire Brookfield’s stake in 21 Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) managing renewable power generation projects and their holding companies. These include assets from TerraForm, Axis, Electryone, NTPC, and NHPC.

Brookfield has a global renewable capacity of 46 GW and a development pipeline of approximately 200 GW across North and South America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, with a significant portion in hydroelectric, wind, solar, and storage projects. In India, its renewable portfolio includes around 40 GW of wind and solar assets in various stages of operation, construction, and development.

Gentari Renewables has been expanding its presence in India’s clean energy sector. In November 2024, the company won a 400 MW capacity in SJVN’s auction for 1,200 MW wind-solar hybrid projects at a tariff of Rs 3.19/kWh. Brookfield also remains active in India, with the International Finance Corporation investing $105 million in its 550 MW solar project in Bikaner, Rajasthan, announced in June 2024.
