G Kishan Reddy assumed office as the coal and mines minister, advocating for increased domestic coal production to reduce imports. During the event, Pralhad Joshi, the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy, wished Reddy success.

Joshi previously held the coal and mines portfolios in the earlier Narendra Modi government. Reddy highlighted the need to cut imports and boost domestic output, noting a 7.7% rise in India's coal imports to 268.24 million tonnes in FY '24.

He recalled the coal shortage and subsequent electricity shortage a decade ago, emphasizing that power availability has since stabilised. Regarding his priorities for the mines sector, Reddy stated that he would first review the department and meet with his officers before setting specific goals.

He expressed his commitment to strengthening India through dedicated efforts in both ministries over the next five years, stressing teamwork and determination. Reddy, who retained the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of over 49,000 votes, began his political career in 1977 and has held several key positions within the BJP, including state unit president and national president of the BJP's Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

He has also served as Union Minister for Home, Tourism, Culture, and Development of the Northeast Region, and is a three-time MLA. Additionally, Satish Chandra Dubey, a prominent BJP leader from Bihar, took charge as the Minister of State for Coal and Mines Ministries. (Source: ET)
