Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) to advance clean coal technologies and explore diversified coal utilization. This collaboration aligns with India's net-zero commitments, focusing on sustainable coal usage.

Key Highlights of the Partnership CIL to establish the Centre of Clean Coal Energy & Net Zero (CLEANZ) at IIT Hyderabad. The initiative will develop cutting-edge Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) for sustainable coal utilization. The project operates under the National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER), the R&D unit of CMPDI, CIL's mine development and consultancy arm. CIL has allocated ?98 crore over five years to set up this Centre of Excellence. The project aims to be financially self-sustainable beyond the initial funding phase. In July 2024, CIL’s Board approved R&D grants for reputed government institutions to enhance research capabilities and establish Centres of Excellence. Driving Innovation in Clean Energy This collaboration underscores CIL’s commitment to sustainable mining practices, leveraging research and development to drive eco-friendly coal technologies.

As of December 31, 2024, the Government of India holds a 63.13% stake in Coal India, which remains a pivotal player in India's energy sector.
