Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) to establish the Centre of Clean Coal Energy and Net Zero (CLEANZ). This initiative aims to advance clean coal technologies and diversify coal utilisation, aligning with India’s Net Zero commitments.
Union Minister of Coal & Mines G Kishan Reddy witnessed the signing, with CIL Chairman P M Prasad and IIT-H Director Prof. B S Murty formalising the pact. CIL has approved a Rs 980 million grant over five years for the project, with expectations of financial self-sustainability beyond this period.
CLEANZ will focus on areas like enhanced coal bed methane recovery, carbon capture technologies, coal gasification, syngas utilisation, and AI-driven energy efficiency. It will also offer training, skill enhancement, and advanced extraction technologies for critical minerals.
