Zojila Tunnel Project Halfway Through; Completion Expected by 2026

The Zojila Tunnel project, a key infrastructure endeavor aimed at providing all-weather road access between Kashmir and Ladakh, has reached the halfway point. As of August 2024, over 50% of the construction work is complete, with the project expected to be finished by 2026.

This strategic tunnel, located at an altitude of approximately 11,000 feet, will be one of the longest and highest tunnels in the world upon completion. It aims to ensure year-round connectivity across the Zojila Pass, which is often blocked by heavy snowfall during the winter months. Currently, the pass remains closed for several months each year due to adverse weather conditions, severely affecting travel and supply chains.

The Zojila Tunnel will significantly enhance transportation links between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, reducing travel time and improving the reliability of road access in the region. It is anticipated that the tunnel will cut the journey time from Srinagar to Leh from around 12 hours to approximately 4 hours, thereby facilitating smoother movement of people and goods.

The project involves the construction of a 14.2-kilometer-long tunnel and an additional 8 kilometres of approach roads. It is being executed in challenging terrain, requiring advanced engineering techniques and robust safety measures. The project has faced delays due to technical challenges and harsh environmental conditions, but progress continues steadily.

The successful completion of the Zojila Tunnel will have a transformative impact on the region, bolstering economic development, improving strategic military mobility, and providing crucial support to local communities. The Indian government has emphasised its commitment to the timely completion of this vital infrastructure project, underscoring its importance for national security and regional integration.
