Vizhinjam Seaport Gets Customs Approval, Says Kerala Minister

Kerala Minister Ahmed Devarkovil announced that Vizhinjam International Seaport has received customs approval, marking a significant milestone in its development. This approval is a crucial step towards making the port operational and enhancing its capacity to handle international cargo.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport, located near Thiruvananthapuram, is poised to become a major hub for maritime trade, strategically positioned to attract transshipment traffic from major shipping routes. With customs clearance now secured, the port can streamline its operations, ensuring efficient handling and processing of goods.

The minister emphasized the importance of this approval in boosting the state's economic growth and its maritime infrastructure. The port is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs and time for exporters and importers, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Indian trade on the global stage.

The Vizhinjam project, developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), has faced various challenges, including delays due to environmental concerns and protests. However, the recent customs approval marks a positive turn in its progress, bringing it closer to operational readiness.

Once fully operational, the port will have the capacity to handle mega ships, contributing to the decongestion of other major ports in India and promoting regional economic development. The project's completion is anticipated to generate employment opportunities and stimulate investment in the region.

The Kerala government is committed to expediting the remaining work to ensure the port becomes fully functional. The Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to play a pivotal role in India's maritime infrastructure, enhancing trade connectivity and supporting the country's economic ambitions.
