URC begins building Chennai Metro phase II, line 3
URC Construction initiated the construction work on Metro Line-3 of Chennai Metro Phase II with a Pooja ceremony at Thousand Lights Metro Crossover under Package UG03. It was mentioned in a tweet by Rail Vikas Nigam on March 25 that the diaphragm wall (D-wall) construction had already commenced at Thousand Lights Metro Crossover using a Trench cutter.
Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) informed that they had subcontracted the construction work to URC for an undisclosed amount subsequent to Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) awarding RVNL the contract under Package UG03-RT01 for Rs 13.28 billion in July 2023, with a 1725-day (4.72 Years) deadline.
The scope of the package includes the comprehensive civil construction of five underground stations: KMC (Kilpauk), Sterling Road Junction, Nangambakkam, Gemini, Thousand Lights, and Thousand Lights Crossover. It was also noted that partial work on two stations involves the construction of a diaphragm wall (D-wall) at Chetpet Metro and Royapettah Govt. Hospital.
Regarding the new interchangeable connection, it was highlighted that KMC?s new station box will be interchangeable with the Green Line (Line 2-22 km), which connects St. Thomas Mount to Chennai Central. Additionally, a new station box at Thousand Lights will be interchangeable with the Blue Line (Line 1-23.10 km), which connects Wimco Nagar to Chennai Airport.
The completion deadline for CMRL?s phase 2 project is December 2025. This project is an integral part of Chennai?s metro expansion initiative, aimed at providing efficient and eco-friendly transportation while alleviating the city?s persistent traffic congestion issues.
People are encouraged to explore the myriad possibilities of the city?s Metro at InnoMetro, the flagship Expo and Conference. They are invited to actively participate in shaping its future towards a more sustainable tomorrow. It is suggested to stay informed and join the efforts to take a step towards a brighter future.
