Tricity Metro Construction to Begin March 2024

The Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) has announced that construction of the Metro system in the Tricity region, encompassing Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali, will start in March of the coming year. The agency is working to complete the alternative analysis report (AAR) and detailed project report (DPR) by December. Once these reports are received, the Chandigarh administration will seek government approval for the project, which is estimated to cost approximately Rs 105.70 billion. The project will be funded with contributions from states and the central government, along with a 60% loan from a lending agency.

The Metro project is set to address long-standing traffic congestion issues in the area, with the first phase covering 77 km in total, spanning Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali/New Chandigarh. Phase-I is scheduled to be developed from 2027 to 2037, offering relief to the region's transportation challenges.
