THDCIL to begin operations at first unit of 1,000MW Tehri hydro plant


State-owned THDC India Ltd (THDCIL) has announced that a 250-MW unit of its 1,000-MW pumped storage power plant at Tehri, Uttarakhand, will commence operations within a week. The unit was recently synchronized with the national grid under the supervision of THDCIL Chairman and Managing Director R.K. Vishnoi.

The Tehri project comprises four units, each with a capacity of 250 MW. The second unit is scheduled to be commissioned by January 2025, with all four units expected to be operational by 2025.

R K Vishnoi hailed the milestone as a significant achievement in renewable energy and disclosed that approximately Rs 78 billion has been invested in the project to date. THDCIL currently operates with an installed capacity of 1,587 MW, comprising 1,424 MW of hydro, 113 MW of wind, and 50 MW of solar power. Additionally, the company is developing a 1,320 MW (2x660 MW) Super Thermal Power Project in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.
