Tata Power commissions 126 MW floating solar project

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has commissioned the 126 MW Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Madhya Pradesh, marking one of India’s largest floating solar installations. The Rs 5.96 billion project was awarded by NHDC Limited and supplies clean power to the Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL).

The project, located in Khandwa district between the Indirasagar and Omkareshwar hydroelectric reservoirs, faced challenges such as fluctuating water levels, strong winds, and limited access. Despite these hurdles, TPREL completed the project in 26 months.

Equipped with 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass modules, the installation generates 204,580 MWh of energy annually, offsetting around 173,893 tonnes of CO? emissions each year. The floating solar plant covers 260 hectares and includes advanced engineering solutions like mooring systems, wave breakers, ballast anchors, and adaptive cableways. It also hosts the world’s largest floating platform for inverters, helping to conserve an estimated 32.5 million cubic meters of water annually by reducing evaporation.

“We are delighted to set a new benchmark with one of the largest floating solar installations in the country,” Deepesh Nanda, CEO and Managing Director, TPREL, said, noting that the project demonstrates how renewable resources can contribute to carbon reduction.

Rajeev Jain, Managing Director, NHDC Limited, said, “The commissioning of the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project marks a significant milestone for NHDC and our commitment to sustainable energy solutions.”

Following this project, TPREL’s total renewable energy capacity stands at 10.9 GW, with 5.6 GW of projects under implementation and an operational capacity of 5.3 GW, including 4.3 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind energy projects.
