Tamil Nadu Shortlists Two Sites for Hosur Airport
The Tamil Nadu government has reportedly shortlisted two potential sites in Hosur, Krishnagiri district, for a new greenfield airport to cater to the region’s growing manufacturing sector. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will soon be tasked with conducting detailed studies of the selected locations, which are within a 20 km radius of each other, as confirmed by multiple sources to TOI.
This decision follows a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister M K Stalin at the state secretariat. A multi-disciplinary team from AAI and TIDCO assessed the feasibility of four proposed sites near Hosur in September. The sites under consideration included Thogarai Agraharam, Shoolagiri, Dhasapalli, and an area near a private airstrip. “Two locations have now been shortlisted, based on an interim report by AAI,” a source disclosed. The state government intends to formally request a detailed study from AAI next week.
The location near the private airstrip is expected to be prioritized, with potential negotiations to purchase the asset if the price is reasonable. Srivats Ram, Chairman of CII TN State Council, expressed that the airport would serve as a key logistics hub for South India, fostering regional integration with Bengaluru and promoting growth in surrounding districts like Dharmapuri and Salem.
Hosur, known for its automotive industry, is expanding into sectors such as advanced manufacturing, electronics, and electric vehicles. Earlier this year, Chief Minister Stalin announced that the proposed airport, spread across 2,000 acres, would have the capacity to handle up to 30 million passengers annually.
