State Govt to Distribute 1.14 Lakh Homes
In a significant move to provide homes for the underprivileged, the Andhra Pradesh state government will officially hand over keys to 1.14 lakh beneficiaries under the housing scheme on February 1. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will participate in a mass house-warming ceremony at Thetali village in Tanuku constituency, marking the launch of this major initiative.
Ministers, legislators, and ruling party leaders across the state have been urged to kick-start similar programs in their respective constituencies after the CM's official launch. The housing project, which includes the completion of 1.14 lakh houses over the last six months, was carried out despite severe financial constraints left by the previous YSRCP government.
Housing Minister Kolusu Parthasaradhi highlighted that the CM had directed district collectors and legislators to begin identifying land for house-sites to be granted to the poor. Under the new plan, 3 cents of land will be allotted in rural areas and 2 cents in urban areas. A state-level high-level committee, led by the revenue minister, will oversee this process, with district-level committees headed by district collectors.
The government is also addressing the financial mismanagement of the previous regime, which allegedly diverted significant funds meant for the housing scheme, leaving beneficiaries stranded. The current administration has already allocated funds to clear outstanding dues. Furthermore, Chief Minister Naidu is committed to clearing the bills for houses completed between 2014 and 2019, a period during which the previous government failed to make necessary payments.
In a major relief, the Centre has extended the deadline for completing PMAY 1.0 until December 2025, following a request from the Chief Minister. The government is working diligently to complete an additional 700,000 homes by December, which will generate around 7 million working days under NREGS and contribute significant wages. Additionally, the material component of the housing scheme is expected to bring in GST revenue, further benefiting the state's economy.
