SECL Surpasses Pro-Rata Target with 281 MCuM Overburden Removal
South Eastern Coalfields (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, has achieved over 281 million cubic metres (MCuM) of overburden removal (OBR) between April 2024 and January 2025, surpassing its pro-rata target by 105 per cent. This represents a 7.58 per cent increase over the same period last year, with an additional 19.82 MCuM cleared.
OBR, which involves the removal of soil and rock layers prior to coal extraction, is essential for coal production. SECL is currently removing more than 1.3 million cubic metres of overburden daily, a pace never seen before in its operations. The company is on track to exceed its annual target, with an additional 40-45 MCuM expected, setting a new record for OBR.
SECL has implemented the vertical ripper technique, a blast-free method, for overburden removal in its major projects, reducing environmental impact while ensuring operational efficiency. The company has also accelerated its land acquisition efforts, providing over 880 employment opportunities to landowners in 2024, as part of its commitment to community welfare.
By focusing on overburden removal and adopting sustainable practices, SECL continues to strengthen its leadership in the mining sector, supporting coal production and community development.
