Rs 8.39 Bn Allocation Boosts Pune's Nigdi-Katraj Metro Plans
Pune’s metro connectivity is set for significant growth, with the Maharashtra government allocating Rs 8.38 billion for the 2025-26 fiscal year. This funding will primarily support the on-going and planned extensions of the metro network, including the PCMC-Nigdi and Swargate-Katraj routes, as well as completing the remaining sections of phase-1.
The allocation, which includes contributions from the Union government, will be used for the completion of key extensions and phase-1 routes. Funds will be disbursed based on project progress and needs, ensuring that metro work across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad remains on schedule and free from financial delays. The opening of the PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi metro routes in October 2024 marked a significant milestone, while construction continues at Khadki and Range Hills stations.
Work has already begun on the Pimpri-Nigdi extension, with the Swargate-Katraj underground metro route set to commence within the next two to three months. These critical projects will expand metro coverage to more areas across both cities, with the Pimpri-Nigdi stretch expected to be completed in approximately two and a half years.
In January 2025, the daily ridership on the fully operational metro routes reached 1.60 lakh, connecting Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad’s east-west and north-south areas. However, there is growing demand for improved last-mile connectivity, and Maha Metro is prioritizing enhancements in this area. Additionally, studies on new proposed routes are being expedited.
The Centre has also allocated Rs 2.30 billion for the Mula-Mutha pollution abatement project, which includes a loan of Rs 9.90 billion from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has secured nearly Rs 3 billion for sewage treatment plants (STPs), with plans to sanction ten STPs by December. Despite 2024 delays, PMC officials are confident that funding will help meet infrastructure goals in the near future.
