Rajasthan government starts exploring coal bed methane reserves

Officials have announced the initiation of exploring the possibilities of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) and underground coal gasification in Rajasthan. They noted that CBM is a significant energy source in countries such as America, Canada, and Australia.

The potential sites for exploration have been identified in Bikaner, Barmer, and Nagaur. Oil India officials have been tasked with advancing the exploration process for CBM and underground coal gasification in the state.

A high-level meeting was convened on Tuesday at the Secretariat with Indian Oil officials, chaired by Anandi, the Secretary of Petroleum and Mines of the Rajasthan government. During the meeting, Mines Secretary Anandi stated that promoting a gas-based economy is possible by exploring CBM and UCG from the state's lignite reserves, which would help develop additional energy sources.

She mentioned that CBM has become a crucial energy source in countries like America, Canada, and Australia, and urged Oil India officials to explore the potential of CBM alongside the discovery and exploitation of crude oil and gas in the state to maximize the use of natural resources in the energy sector. Anandi also emphasized that underground coal gasification is an option for decarbonisation and a valuable energy source.
