Rajasthan Announces 150 Units of Free Electricity with Rooftop Solar

The Rajasthan government has increased free monthly electricity under the Chief Minister Free Electricity Program from 100 to 150 units. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Diya Kumari while presenting the 2025-26 state budget.
As part of this initiative, the government will install free rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for eligible beneficiaries. Additionally, community rooftop solar projects will be set up at no extra cost for low-income groups with limited rooftop access.
Rajasthan has set ambitious renewable energy goals, targeting 10 GW of private-sector renewable energy installations. The state also plans to provide 50,000 new agricultural and 500,000 domestic electricity connections. Infrastructure upgrades include the construction of one 765 kV substation, five 400 kV substations, 13 of 220 kV, 28 of 132 kV, and 133 of 33/11 kV.
To attract investments, the Rajasthan Investment Promotion Scheme 2024 offers incentives, including a 100% exemption from electricity duty for seven years, supporting renewable energy, battery storage, and green hydrogen projects.
Under the Renewable Energy Policy 2023, Rajasthan aims to develop 90 GW of renewable energy by 2029-30, including 65 GW of solar, 15 GW of wind and hybrid projects, and 10 GW of hydropower, pumped storage, and battery energy storage. The policy will remain in effect until 2027.
India’s solar sector saw significant growth, with 16.4 GW of capacity added in the first nine months of 2024—a 167% increase from 2023. Rajasthan contributed 27% of the country’s cumulative large-scale solar capacity, reinforcing its leadership in renewable energy.
