Racquet-shaped jetty at Radio Club

The eagerly anticipated Radio Club Jetty, which is intended to relieve congestion at the Gateway of India, will shortly be the subject of tenders floated by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB).

"We have all the required authorizations and environmental clearances. Amit Saini, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the MMB, told The Indian Express that tenders will now be released for the appointment of the contractor, and we anticipate the jetty to be completed in 2025. Although the intended project was conceived 16 years ago, work on the jetty, including the procurement procedure, just began this year.

The MMB claims that once the Radio Club Jetty is constructed, it will relieve congestion at the Gateway of India by acting as a hub for passenger traffic. Also, there are numerous traditional boat services available at the Gateway of India.

Over 22.20 lakh passengers travelled through the Gateway of India in 2022–2023 (until February 2023), an increase from 12.23 lakh the year before.

Many residents of Mumbai favour the Gateway of India since it is conveniently connected to the adjacent suburban train stations and is a well-known tourist destination where thousands of visitors arrive each day to enjoy a ferry ride for fun. In 2022–2023, the Mumbai Port Authority's New Ferry Wharf at Mazgoan Dock served 4.67 lakh passengers (till Feb).

The MMB will offer passenger amenities at the Radio Club Jetty, including a cafeteria, ticket booths, a parking facility, and a planted green area, among others. Since it is primarily intended to help passengers, Saini continued, it won't contain any other commercial activities like banquet rooms for weddings or other events, which are frequently seen at such terminals.
