POWERGRID Secures Projects to Enhance Substation Capacity

Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has secured two projects from REC Power Development and Consultancy (RECPDCL) aimed at enhancing the substation capacity and establishing an interstate transmission system (ISTS) in Gujarat and Karnataka. The projects will involve increasing transformation capacity at the KPS1 (GIS) and KPS2 (GIS) (Phase-V Part B1 and B2) in Gujarat and boosting transformation capacity at the Bidar PS in Karnataka by 3×500 MVA, 400/220kV ICTs (6th-8th) and 1×1500 MVA, 765/400kV ICT (4th).

Gujarat Projects: The tender for the Gujarat-based projects was issued in October 2024. The KPS1 and KPS2 projects are designed to support renewable energy generation in the Khavda region of Gujarat, which is home to the 30,000 MW Khavda Renewable Energy Park under construction.

POWERGRID will enhance the transformation capacity at KPS1 by 1×1500 MVA, 765/400 kV ICT on bus section-II and 1×1500 MVA, 765/400 kV ICT on bus section-I at KPS2.

Karnataka Projects: The tender for the Karnataka-based projects was issued in November 2024. POWERGRID will undertake the design, construction, and testing of all equipment, facilities, and systems required for the project. Both projects are expected to be completed within 24 months of allocation. In December 2024, POWERGRID won another project from RECPDCL to establish an ISTS for evacuating 8 GW of renewable energy from Gujarat. Similarly, in October 2024, the company won a tender from PFC Consulting to evacuate 5.5 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer/Barmer complex.
