Gio Ponti: The Master of Modern Italian Design Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was a prolific architect, designer, and artistic director whose contributions reshaped Italian creative production in the 20th century. A founder of the Domus magazine and promoter of the Compasso d’Oro, Ponti’s creative reach extended from ceramics and furniture to architecture, including the renowned Pirelli skyscraper in Milan.

His design philosophy embraced both Art Deco elegance and Rationalist functionality, with a flair for blending artistic imagination and industrial production. Ponti’s work reflects a deep respect for craftsmanship and a futuristic vision that still influences contemporary design today.

The Dezza Armchair: Then and Now Designed by Ponti in 1965, the Dezza armchair was the first product to signify Poltrona Frau’s new era after relocating its headquarters to Tolentino in 1962. The Dezza stood out with its clean, squared lines balanced by graceful curved armrests, reflecting both modernist and organic aesthetics.

In 2025, Poltrona Frau reintroduces the Dezza in a limited edition of 60 numbered pieces, celebrating its 60th anniversary. Upholstered in Pelle Frau® ColorSphere Impact Less leather—a sustainable innovation introduced by the brand in 2022—the edition is available in two elegant colorways: Panna and Iris, inspired by Ponti’s interiors at the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento.

The standout feature of the re-edition is its upholstery pattern, derived from a previously unpublished Gio Ponti illustration featuring 26 stylized hands, each with its own symbolic identity. This tribute emphasizes Ponti’s fascination with artisanal expression and aligns with Poltrona Frau’s philosophy of celebrating the “intelligence of the hands.”
