PCMC green lights subway at Rakshak Chowk to ease traffic

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved the construction of a subway at Rakshak Chowk on the Sangvi-Kiwale Road to tackle the growing traffic congestion in the area. The project, endorsed by the civic body's standing committee, aims to streamline traffic flow and provide relief to daily commuters, local residents, and schoolchildren who frequently travel this route.

The new subway is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Pune and PCMC by creating a seamless link and reducing travel time for vehicles heading from Dange Chowk towards Pimple Nilakh and Aundh Military Station. This development is part of PCMC’s broader initiative to upgrade infrastructure and alleviate traffic bottlenecks in rapidly expanding areas.

With Sangvi-Kiwale Road serving as a vital corridor connecting PCMC to Pune and Mumbai, passing through Wakad, Hinjawadi, Punawale, Ravet, and Tathawade, the area has experienced a surge in traffic due to rapid urbanisation. Heavy vehicular movement, including BRT buses, school buses, and goods carriers, has resulted in frequent traffic jams and fuel wastage at Rakshak Chowk.

The new subway will provide a signal-free corridor, reducing delays and environmental impact. PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh emphasised the project’s long-term benefits, "This subway is a crucial step in addressing congestion at Rakshak Chowk. By minimising traffic delays, we will also reduce fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment."

Project details: - Location: Rakshak Chowk, Sangvi-Kiwale Road - Subway dimensions: - Width: 26.40 meters - Ramps: 125 meters towards Aundh and 240 meters towards Jagtap Dairy - Project timeline: 18 months - Initial tender amount: Rs 227.7 million - Accepted tender amount: Rs 186.7 million

Once completed, the subway is expected to significantly enhance the commuting experience for thousands of daily travelers.
