Over 6 Lakh Houses Approved Under PMAY-U 2.0, Says Housing Minister

The government has sanctioned over six lakh houses to 29 states and Union Territories (UTs) under the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), as stated by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. He further mentioned that an additional one lakh houses would be sanctioned once the remaining seven states and UTs sign agreements with the housing ministry.

Khattar shared that Uttar Pradesh received the maximum number of houses, with 1.1 lakh units sanctioned, followed by Maharashtra with 92,000, West Bengal with 55,000, and both Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat with 50,000 units each. Smaller states and UTs, such as Goa, Sikkim, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, received sanctions for 500 units each.

PMAY(U) 2.0 was approved by the Union Cabinet on August 9 and officially launched on September 17. Speaking to reporters about the ministry’s flagship programmes, Khattar explained that the number of houses to be sanctioned for each state and UT over the next five years would be announced after March, based on state-level surveys. This clear announcement would help applicants understand in which year their application would be sanctioned.

The minister also mentioned that a similar survey would be conducted to assess the need for rental housing for working women, industrial workers, migrants, and other eligible beneficiaries. He added that PMAY(U) 2.0 has incorporated rental housing as a major component to address the growing accommodation needs in urban areas.
