Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India, a bustling site for boat traffic, is set for significant improvements with the addition of a new passenger jetty at the nearby Radio Club. This project, with a completion timeline of approximately 30 months, aims to alleviate congestion at the Gateway of India, where around 2.5 million passengers embark and disembark from boats each year.

The MMB recently awarded the Radio Club Boat Jetty project contract to RKEC Project, marking an important step toward upgrading the city’s maritime infrastructure.

An MMB official explained that the current reliance on the Gateway of India by all boats has led to overcrowding, increasing the risk of accidents. The official emphasized that the new jetty would bring order, offer modern facilities, and enhance safety for passengers.

This busy maritime hub has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure, resulting in overcrowding and creating safety issues, especially for elderly passengers who encounter challenges while boarding. Once operational, the Radio Club Jetty is expected to reroute all boat traffic from the Gateway of India, substantially reducing congestion. The new facility will have the capacity to accommodate up to 20 boats at once, facilitating smoother and more organised operations. Additionally, the jetty is designed to protect the historic Gateway of India from further wear and tear due to heavy use.
