New Norms For Tilting Buildings In West Bengal
The state urban development and municipal affairs department issued guidelines on corrective measures for tilting buildings in Salt Lake, New Town and other municipal areas in the state. The state guidelines followed a KMC SOP last week. The urban development department SOP requires the owner of the building that has tilted to submit a detailed proposal to the local civic authority on the lifting mechanism, along with the credentials of the organisation that is to be appointed for executing the work.
If satisfied, the civic body will send the details of the lifting mechanism to a reputed engineering institution for necessary vetting. Permission for the lifting will be granted only after the lifting mechanism plan is vetted.
KMC officials said the owner or promoter of such a building will have to conduct a soil test. If the results are found conducive, then an agency, which has credentials in such precision work, can be appointed. The entire process had to be done under the supervision of a structural engineer, the official said.
