Narendra Modi Stadium: How L&T leveraged technology and expertise
The Narendra Modi Stadium, earlier known as the Motera Stadium, dethroned the Melbourne Cricket Ground in its seating capacity. Located near the banks of Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, it is the world’s largest cricket stadium and the second-largest stadium overall. It is the only cricket stadium in the country to be awarded the Gold Green Building rating.
First constructed in 1982, it had a seating capacity of about 35,000 spectators. The stadium can now accommodate over 110,000 cricket fans, surpassing the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which has the capacity to accommodate 100,000 spectators.
That scale, along with design complexities, were contractor L&T Construction’s several challenges. Technology played a major part in addressing them.
“L&T’s brief was to construct a new stadium on the same footprint of the older stadium with three times more capacity,” shares MV Satish, Whole‐Time Director & Senior Executive Vice-President - Buildings, L&T Construction.
