Mumbai Metro Line 14 Set to Move Forward, Construction Likely Within a Year

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is fast-tracking the highly anticipated Mumbai Metro Line 14, a 38-km metro corridor linking Kanjurmarg to Badlapur. This significant expansion aims to reduce travel time, improve connectivity, and ease congestion across the metropolitan region.

Key Developments and Approvals In a crucial step forward, MMRDA has floated a tender to appoint a consultant for:

Preparing an environmental impact report Securing necessary approvals from the forest and environment departments Once the consultant is onboard, formalities are expected to be completed swiftly, paving the way for construction to commence within the next twelve months.

Enhanced Connectivity for Badlapur Residents For daily commuters from Badlapur, Metro Line 14 promises much-needed relief, drastically cutting down the current 1.5 to 2-hour commute to Mumbai. As Mumbai’s metro network expands to 337 km, this corridor is poised to become a vital transit route for the extended metropolitan region.

Project Details and Challenges The Detailed Project Report (DPR)—prepared by Milan Metro and approved by IIT Bombay—is currently awaiting state government clearance. Following approval, MMRDA will launch the bidding process to keep the project on track.

With sensitive ecological zones such as Thane Creek, Parsik Hill, and the Flamingo Sanctuary along the route, obtaining environmental clearances remains a top priority.

Metro Line 14 will feature a hybrid design, consisting of:

An underground section from Kanjurmarg to Ghansoli An elevated corridor from Ghansoli to Badlapur

One of MMRDA’s Most Ambitious Metro Projects With an estimated cost of Rs 180 billion, Metro Line 14 stands as one of MMRDA’s most ambitious infrastructure ventures, set to transform urban mobility and bolster public transport capacity in Mumbai’s rapidly expanding suburbs.
