MMRDA clears Rs 1,186 cr proposals to expedite Metro-2B, MTHL works

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved two projects totalling over Rs 1,186 crore, paving the way for the Metro-2B corridor and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).

According to MMRDA, a proposal worth over Rs 759 crore was approved on Tuesday for the construction of Metro-2B between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Chembur, followed by a contract worth over Rs 427 crore for toll operation and the installation of an intelligent traffic management system for MTHL.

The MMRDA is building the 23.5 km, DN Nagar, to Mankhurd Metro-2B Corridor, which will have 22 stations. Both projects are behind schedule due to the slow pace of construction and delays in obtaining the right of way (ROW).

The total cost of the project is Rs 11,000 crore, divided into seven packages. A joint venture was awarded a contract worth Rs 521 crore for 5.9 km of elevated lines, including six stations: MTNL Metro, SG Barve Marg, Kurla Terminus, Kurla East, and Chembur. However, due to the slow pace of work, the contract was later terminated.

The MMRDA appointed NCC as the new contractor for a sum of Rs 760 crore, stating that the project must be completed within the next two years.

MMRDA also hired a contractor to build a toll booth management system using the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) at Rs 427 crore.

The scope of work, according to the MMRDA, includes the installation, testing, and commissioning of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), toll management systems, electrical works, highway illumination systems, toll plaza construction, and administrative buildings, including Command Control Centres.
