Metro extension work between Badi Chaupar and Transport Nagar halted

The Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) has halted the extension of Metro Line 1C between Badi Chaupar and Transport Nagar for an indefinite period, according to sources familiar with the matter.

A senior JMRC official stated that the decision was made following directives from the state government. The official mentioned that they had been instructed to slow down the expansion of Metro Line 1C, leading to the suspension of the project. However, the specific reasons behind this directive remain unclear, the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Urban Development and Housing (UDH) Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra and Department Secretary Vaibhav Galriya did not respond to requests for comment. JMRC sources suggested that the decision to delay the work could be attributed to two potential reasons: the government may want to alter the alignment of the extended route based on the development of the proposed satellite bus terminus at Transport Nagar, and the availability of funds.

According to a JMRC official, the metro station at Transport Nagar is planned to be located near the satellite bus terminal, but the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has yet to identify the land for the terminal. The government might reconsider the metro's alignment once the land is finalised, the official noted.

In 2022, the then Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had approved Rs 9.93 billion for the construction of Line 1C of Jaipur Metro. An official suggested that the government might prefer not to allocate these funds until the alignment is finalised.

Meanwhile, JMRC officials assured that the extension work for Line 1D between Mansarovar and the 200-feet Bypass is progressing as planned, with completion expected by the end of 2025.
