Mahindra Unveils EV Manufacturing Facility at Chakan

Auto giant Mahindra has unveiled its next-generation electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant, marking a major milestone in the company’s sustainability and innovation journey.

Strategically located within Mahindra’s Chakan manufacturing hub, the facility is fully powered by renewable energy, and operates as a water-positive site, reinforcing the company’s commitment to green manufacturing practices.

As part of its ambitious Rs 160 billion investment plan for FY22-FY27, Mahindra has allocated Rs 45 billion to this advanced facility, which will focus on powertrain development, cutting-edge manufacturing processes, and software integration. The investment ensures the production of high-quality electric vehicles and components.

Spanning 88,000 square meters, the plant features a fully automated Press Shop, an AI-driven Body Shop, and a state-of-the-art robotic Paint Shop. Over 500 robots, monitored through IoT-based systems, oversee operations, providing real-time insights and traceability. Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) optimize material handling, reinforcing Mahindra’s focus on efficiency and safety.

The facility also includes a world-class battery assembly line that uses patented manufacturing techniques for enhanced safety and precision. With multi-layered testing protocols, the batteries undergo rigorous evaluations, including IP67-rated ingress protection and real-time anomaly monitoring, ensuring robust performance.

Mahindra is also committed to inclusivity, targeting a 25% gender diversity ratio in the facility’s workforce, while emphasizing skill development to prepare for future advancements.

This new facility aligns with India’s COP26 climate goals and furthers Mahindra’s vision of sustainable manufacturing, making significant strides towards reducing carbon emissions. The plant stands as a testament to Mahindra’s goal of “Make in India for the World.”
