Madurai Airport Upgraded to Grade 2 Status

Madurai Airport has been elevated from APD grade 3 to grade 2 by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), marking a significant milestone in its development. The upgrade follows a rise in passenger and cargo traffic, coupled with the initiation of night operations two months ago. Madurai joins five other airports—Agartala, Bhopal, Surat, Udaipur, and Vijayawada—in receiving grade 2 status, which reflects a comprehensive review of increasing air traffic across the country. According to Airport Director P. Muthukumar, the new status allows Madurai Airport to independently undertake certain development projects without requiring approvals from the regional office. This autonomy is expected to streamline decision-making and speed up project execution. With grade 2 status, Madurai Airport is poised for significant growth. Enhanced infrastructure and upgraded facilities will improve passenger experience and operational efficiency while attracting more airlines. This expansion is also expected to support the proposed runway extension, further boosting the airport’s domestic and international connectivity.
