Large Section of 133-km Chennai Peripheral Ring Road to Finish by Year-end
A significant portion of the 133-km-long Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR), extending from Ennore Port to Poonjeri near Mamallapuram, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The Highways Department has reported good progress on the 30.8-km stretch from Tiruvallur Bypass to Sriperumbudur.
L&T, one of the contractors responsible for this section, started work in August 2021 and has completed 79 per cent of the project, adhering to the schedule for finishing its portion of the six-lane road. Another contractor, SPK, has also made progress, completing approximately 50 per cent of its section.
The stretch from Sriperumbudur to Singaperumalkoil (Section 4) has already been completed. The project includes the construction of two-lane service roads for local traffic along the entire route, with land acquisition currently underway. In areas where land falls within a reserved forest, a proposal for land swapping is being processed.
Land acquisition for Section 5, which spans 27.41 km from Singaperumalkoil to Mamallapuram, is nearing completion. This stretch faced delays due to financial tie-ups but is now set to move forward with tenders to be floated soon. Initially planned as a four-lane road, it has now been upgraded to a six-lane facility.
Section 1, from Ennore Port to Thatchur, includes challenges such as relocating 12 tanks and heavy power transmission lines, which will delay its completion.
Upon completion, the CPRR will likely become the first access-controlled road managed by the Highways Department in the city. It will provide crucial connections to NH 5 (Chennai-Tada), NH 4 (Chennai-Bengaluru), NH 45 (Chennai-Tiruchi), and the East Coast Road.
