Kolkata Metro Replaces Steel Third Rail with Aluminium for Energy Efficiency

The Kolkata Metro has successfully replaced the steel third rail with an aluminium counterpart at the Girish Park siding along the Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor. This third rail powers Metro trains, and the switch to aluminium promises a significant improvement in energy efficiency.

In a statement on Sunday, Metro Railway announced the completion of a 200-meter rail replacement on Saturday night. The new aluminium third rail is expected to reduce system voltage drops, resulting in less energy loss and faster train acceleration.

Metro Railway has set a two-year timeline for the full replacement of third rails, targeting an 84% reduction in energy loss—saving Rs one crore per year for each kilometer of track.
