Kochi Water Metro Model to Expand Nationwide
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) has announced plans to replicate its successful Kochi Water Metro in 18 locations across India. This eco-friendly, innovative water transport model is poised to revolutionise urban mobility in areas with rivers, lakes, backwaters, and coastal regions. KMRL, which operates the Kochi Water Metro, has been entrusted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to conduct a feasibility study to assess the potential for similar systems in various regions. The study will focus on areas such as the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, and island connections in Andaman and Lakshadweep, among others. Other cities under consideration include Ahmedabad, Surat, Mangaluru, Ayodhya, Dhubri, Goa, Kollam, Kolkata, Patna, Prayagraj, Srinagar, Varanasi, Mumbai, Kochi, and Vasai. KMRL’s Board of Directors recently approved the formation of a consultancy wing, and an internal committee has been set up to lead the feasibility study. The process may include external experts to enhance its effectiveness. The Kochi Water Metro, known for its modern facilities comparable to metro rail systems and its environmentally sustainable design, has set a new benchmark for urban water transport. The study’s findings will guide the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for suitable locations. This ambitious expansion project aims to harness water bodies for sustainable urban transport, bringing a transformative change in mobility across India. It highlights Kerala's leadership in promoting sustainable development and modern transport innovation. (ET)
