Kochi Metro to Study Extension to Global City

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has confirmed plans to conduct a feasibility study for extending its proposed airport metro line to Ayyampuzha, the site of the upcoming Global City project. This study is officially part of the request for proposal (RFP) for Phase III of the metro expansion.

This marks KMRL’s first formal acknowledgment of the extension, which had been under speculation. The Global City project is a crucial component of the Kochi-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (KBIC), aimed at driving economic and industrial growth in the region.

The KBIC has recently progressed with the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approving an Industrial Manufacturing Cluster (IMC) in Palakkad. Meanwhile, land acquisition for the second key node—Global City in Ayyampuzha—is in its final stages. The project envisions a dynamic urban center housing IT firms, financial institutions, electronic industries, schools, hospitals, and office complexes.

Unlike traditional manufacturing hubs, Global City is planned as a multi-dimensional development with strong tourism potential, utilizing Ayyampuzha’s natural landscape. The proposed metro extension is expected to improve connectivity, attracting investors and facilitating the region’s transformation into a thriving economic and tourism hub.
