JNPT's container cargo traffic rose 65.38% to 454,385 TEUs in May
In May, container cargo traffic at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) increased by 65.38% to 4,54,385 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), over 2,74,755 TEUs in the same month last year.
JNPT told the media that in addition, the port's rail operations handled 86,452 TEUs of inland container depot (ICD) traffic, up from 551 rakes the previous month, for a rail coefficient of 19.03%.
Despite the various challenges faced in recent months, the port has seen a steady increase in cargo handling, and in May 2021, the port implemented several measures to make the business more efficient, economical, and convenient for the EXIM community.
During the month, the port successfully handled 327.632 metric tonnes (MT) of liquid medical oxygen and medical accessories in its fight against Covid-19, the officials said.
JNPT told the media, the port has been ensuring the unhindered movement of vessels carrying oxygen and has given such consignments top priority, adding that the port has handled a total of 278.272 MT liquid oxygen and 49.36 MT medical accessories for distribution to hospitals for Covid treatment.
JNPT Chairman Sanjay Sethi, IAS, told the media that JNPT will continue good performance in May 2021 and also contribute to the effort to combat the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic affecting the country.
JNPT will continue to give oxygen containers and other medical supplies top priority in order to assist the country in overcoming this crisis.
