Jammu Tawi Railway Station Undergoes Major Modernisation
Jammu Tawi Railway Station is undergoing an extensive modernisation to boost passenger experience, safety, and operational efficiency. Northern Railway announced that the upgraded station will be better equipped to manage train operations for the Jammu & Kashmir valley.
The remodelled Jammu Tawi yard is expected to be operational by March 6, 2025, with yard remodelling and non-interlocking work nearing completion. Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, highlighted the importance of the yard remodelling in accelerating the station’s redevelopment.
The Rs 4.5 billion modernisation project will increase the number of platforms from three to seven. These platforms will be fitted with state-of-the-art ballastless track technology for smoother operations and washable aprons for better hygiene.
Key components of the upgrade include two new 12-meter wide foot-over bridges for improved accessibility and a 72-meter wide air concourse connecting all platforms.
Additionally, a 4,500 sqm second-entry station building is being developed on the Narwal side, and the main station building will be expanded to 15,600 sqm with modern amenities.
The yard remodelling will also replace outdated mechanical interlocking systems with advanced electronic interlocking, further enhancing safety and efficiency.
This modernisation project will not only improve the station’s train-handling capacity but also provide a cleaner, more passenger-friendly environment.
