India’s WABAG Wins $371 Mn EPC Contract for Al Haer ISTP in Saudi Arabia

VA Tech Wabag (WABAG), an Indian water technology company, has secured an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract worth $371 million for the Al Haer Independent Sewage Treatment Plant (ISTP) in Riyadh province. The contract was awarded to a consortium comprising WABAG and Mutlaq Al-Ghowairi Contracting Company (MGC).

The Al Haer ISTP project, with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day (m³/day), reached financial closure through a consortium led by Saudi-listed utility Miahona, along with Besix and Power and Water Utility Co. for Jubail and Yanbu (Marafiq). The total investment in the project is valued at 1.5 billion Saudi riyals ($399.93 million).

As the technology partner and EPC consortium leader, WABAG will be responsible for designing and constructing the sewage treatment plant, while MGC will handle the transmission pipeline installation and reservoir construction. The project scope also includes a Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) system, consisting of a 32 km-long TSE transmission network with a capacity of 400,000 m³/day, a TSE pumping station, and storage tanks with a capacity of 200,000 m³. The plant is scheduled to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2026.

In addition to this project, WABAG recently secured a $34 million Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for a 20 million liters per day (MLD) Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant (IWWTP) at the Ras Tanura Refinery Complex, where Miahona is the project developer.

Earlier, in December 2023, WABAG had reported the cancellation of a $317 million Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) contract for a 300,000 m³/day seawater desalination plant in the Kingdom.
