India's Hydrogen Train Sets Global Horsepower Record, Says Vaishnaw

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Indian Railways has developed the world's most powerful hydrogen fuel-powered train engine, boasting 1,200 horsepower—double the capacity of engines built by the four other nations in this category. Speaking at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention during a session titled "Green Connections: Diaspora's Contribution to Sustainable Development," Vaishnaw highlighted this breakthrough as a milestone in indigenous technology.

The minister shared that the first hydrogen-powered train is set for trial runs on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. While manufacturing of the engine is complete, system integration is underway. Vaishnaw emphasised the broader potential of this innovation, suggesting the adaptation of hydrogen-based technology for power trains in trucks, tugboats, and other applications.

"India's indigenous advancements create opportunities to develop derivative technologies, fostering confidence in achieving technological self-sufficiency," Vaishnaw stated.

Mauritius' Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs Hambyarajen Narasinghaen, who also participated in the session, called for India’s support in green technology solutions to address climate change challenges in his country. Other global leaders and industry experts joined the discussion, including Rahul Fotedar from Norway’s Morrow Batteries and Kishore Reddy, among others.

Outside the event, Vaishnaw revealed plans to transform Odisha into an IT hub within two to three years, with thorough discussions held with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The Centre has also expedited railway projects worth over Rs 1 trillion in the state, alongside discussions on youth training programs for IT development.

Additionally, Vaishnaw announced a special train service from Odisha to Uttar Pradesh for Maha Kumbh-2025 at Prayagraj, reinforcing the government’s commitment to regional connectivity and cultural integration.
