Indian auto companies will produce 100% ethanol-run cars
The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, said that many Indian companies are setting up plants to produce 100% ethanol-run cars and two-wheelers in India. Gadkari came to Parliament in a similar vehicle produced by Toyota and told the media that this was the world's first vehicle which has a flex engine and complies with Euro 6 emission norms. He said it gives net zero emissions and runs on ethanol produced from sugarcane juice, molasses, and corn.
Recently, Gadkari stated that Toyota has announced setting up a plant to produce flex cars in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, with an investment of ?200 billion. Gadkari also said that Tatas and Suzuki are working on producing 100% ethanol or flex engine cars. He noted that in the two-wheeler segment, Bajaj, TVS and Hero are making flex-engine bikes and scooters.
Gadkari said that other manufacturers are also working on bringing a flex engine. He stated that just like petrol pumps, there will now be ethanol pumps. Gadkari said these vehicles will reduce pollution, save costs, and benefit farmers, and that the vehicle works on 100% ethanol.
Earlier in August 2023, Nitin Gadkari had unveiled the prototype of a 100% ethanol-run BS-VI-compliant electrified flex-fuel car, developed by Toyota Kirloskar Motors.
Gadkari noted that now the prototype cars are ready for mass production by Toyota, which has announced setting up a plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra for this purpose.
The prototype car unveiled in August 2023 was a 100% ethanol (E100) based Toyota Innova HyCross model, Gadkari explained. He stated that the car can cover 40% of its distance on ethanol and the remaining 60% on electric, with the petrol engine shut off.
Finally, Gadkari said that the ethanol industry is a boon for farmers, with the demand for ethanol set to increase, reshaping India's agricultural economy.
