Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the nation’s remarkable progress, stating, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India’s energy journey over the past ten years has been historic and inspiring. Initiatives like solar panels, solar parks, and rooftop solar projects have brought revolutionary changes. Today, India has successfully achieved the target of 100 GW of solar energy production. In the field of green energy, India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also showing the world a new path.”

Unprecedented Growth in Solar Energy India’s solar power capacity has surged 3,450% in the past decade, rising from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. As of January 31, 2025, the country has 100.33 GW of installed solar capacity, with 84.10 GW under implementation and 47.49 GW in the tendering process. Additionally, 64.67 GW of hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) renewable projects are advancing, bringing the total solar and hybrid capacity to 296.59 GW.

In 2024 alone, India added a record-breaking 24.5 GW of solar capacity, doubling installations from 2023. Utility-scale solar projects accounted for 18.5 GW, marking a 2.8x increase over the previous year. Leading contributors include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.

The rooftop solar sector also experienced a 53% growth in 2024, with 4.59 GW of new capacity added. The PM SuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024, has been instrumental in this expansion, nearing 9 lakh rooftop solar installations across India.

Boosting Domestic Solar Manufacturing India has also significantly expanded its solar manufacturing capacity. From just 2 GW in 2014, the country now produces 60 GW of solar modules as of 2024. With continued policy support, India aims to reach 100 GW of module production by 2030.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), under the leadership of Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi, continues to drive key initiatives to scale up renewable energy. This 100 GW solar milestone cements India’s role as a clean energy powerhouse, ensuring sustainable, affordable energy access while advancing self-reliance in the sector.
