Govt approves sub-scheme on GIS-based Master Plan for AMRUT cities


The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), has approved a sub-scheme on 'Formulation of GIS-based Master Plan for AMRUT Cities' to facilitate states and cities to take up Master Planning, and it is currently being implemented in 456 towns across 35 states and union territories.

Furthermore, on October 1, 2021, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched AMRUT 2.0, which includes a sub-scheme on 'Formulation of GIS-based Master Plans for Class-II towns with populations of 50,000 to 99,999, intending to develop standardised base maps, land use maps, master plans, and urban geo-portals using Geographical Information System (GIS).

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was renamed the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and relaunched in June 2015 by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, to establish infrastructure that could ensure adequate, robust sewage networks and water supply for urban transformation through the implementation of urban revival projects.

Rajasthan was the first state in the country to submit a State Annual Action Plan for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation under the AMRUT. On the same day, the Housing for All by 2022 scheme and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) were announced.

The state government is in charge of urban development, which includes urban planning. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) assists States and Union Territories in making the best use of technology for integrated urban planning by issuing advisories, design standards, and schematic interventions.
