Gold Reserves Discovered in 18 Locations Across Odisha

A recent geological survey has confirmed the presence of gold reserves at 18 locations across Odisha, primarily in tribal-dominated and economically backward districts. The Geological Survey of India (GSI), in collaboration with the State Geological Department, conducted an extensive study mapping these newly identified resources.

Key Gold Deposit Locations The survey highlights significant gold reserves in multiple districts, with notable deposits in: Keonjhar: Aradangi, Dimirmuda, Telkoi, Gopura, Gajaipur, Saleikana, Singpur, and Kusakala. Mayurbhanj: Suleipat, Suruda, Jashipur, and Suriaguda. Other districts with gold reserves: Sundargarh, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Boudh, and Angul.

Interestingly, the mineral-rich Keonjhar district has also been found to contain high-grade platinum deposits, further underscoring Odisha’s vast mineral wealth. Mining Interest and Challenges Odisha’s first aerial survey assessing gold reserves was conducted in 2007, generating significant interest from private mining companies. Since then, 18 companies have applied for permits to explore and extract the gold. However, state government approvals for mining operations remain pending.

Potential Diamond Reserves Identified Beyond gold, Odisha also holds promising diamond reserves. A 2010 survey by De Beers, the world's leading diamond producer, identified Kimberlite and Lamproite formations—rock types known to host diamonds—in the districts of Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, and Bolangir. Despite these discoveries, diamond mining in Odisha is yet to commence, as exploration efforts remain in the early stages.

Odisha’s Untapped Mineral Potential The discovery of gold and diamond reserves highlights Odisha’s immense potential as a mineral-rich state. However, unlocking these resources will require government initiative, sustainable mining policies, and investment from the private sector. Responsible mining could drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and contribute to Odisha’s overall development.
