GMDA Drain Construction Along SPR Faces Delays

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is experiencing significant delays in its drain construction project along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). This project, crucial for preventing waterlogging and improving drainage in the region, has hit several roadblocks, causing concern among residents and officials.

The construction of the drain, which spans 16 kilometres along the SPR, is vital for managing the rainwater runoff and preventing the frequent flooding that plagues the area during monsoons. The project was initially scheduled to be completed within a year, but various challenges have pushed the timeline beyond the expected deadline.

Key issues contributing to the delays include land acquisition problems, shifting of utilities, and contractor performance issues. The GMDA has faced difficulties in acquiring the necessary land for the project, leading to stalled work in several sections. Additionally, the process of relocating utilities such as electricity and water lines has proven to be more complex and time-consuming than anticipated.

Contractor performance has also been a significant concern, with some contractors failing to meet the project milestones. This has prompted the GMDA to consider taking stringent actions, including penalizing underperforming contractors and possibly re-tendering parts of the project to expedite the work.

Residents along the SPR have expressed their frustration over the delays, citing persistent waterlogging issues that disrupt daily life and damage property. The GMDA is under pressure to expedite the project and has been urged to improve coordination with other agencies and stakeholders to resolve the existing bottlenecks.

The successful completion of the drain construction along SPR is critical for enhancing the region's infrastructure and ensuring a more resilient drainage system. The GMDA's efforts to address the delays and streamline the project are crucial in mitigating the waterlogging problems and improving the overall quality of life for Gurgaon's residents.
