GCDA's LIFE Mission housing project set for month-end launch

The LIFE Mission housing project situated on the Greater Cochin Development Authority's (GCDA) land at Mundamveli is set to be launched by the end of this month, according to GCDA sources.

Despite facing several delays, the project is now in its final stages, with only finishing works remaining. One of the blocks has already been completed, and the second block is expected to be finished within the next 15 days.

This launch brings much-needed relief to approximately 80 families residing in P&T Colony, as they will soon be rehabilitated in their new homes.

GCDA sources confirm that all works in Block 2 have been successfully completed. However, the inauguration can only take place after the completion of both blocks. In Block 1, only flooring, painting, and the installation of window frames and grills are pending.

The contractor, Thrissur District Labour Contract Co-operative Society, is working diligently to finish the project at the earliest.

The inauguration of the project is scheduled to be conducted by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The GCDA is coordinating with his office to determine a suitable date for the event. The urgency to complete the rehabilitation before the onset of heavy rains is essential to avoid severe waterlogging issues in P&T Colony.

The housing project comprises two four-storeyed buildings constructed on 70 cents of land, with a total of 83 flats. Each flat spans an area of 375 sq ft and includes two bedrooms, a living-cum-dining room, a kitchen, and a toilet. Additionally, the buildings will offer various common amenities such as a sick room, day care, administrative room, and reading room. Each building will also be equipped with rainwater harvesting tanks, drinking water tanks, and fire safety systems.

The total cost of the project amounts to Rs 146.1 million, with an approximate cost of 16 lakh per unit. Funding for the project comes from different sources: Rs 90.3 million is allotted by the LIFE Mission, an additional Rs 12.3 million is received under the Pradhan Mantri Awaz Yojana (Urban) scheme of the central government, and approximately Rs 48.6 million is received through the funding of Cochin Smart Mission.
