Electric trains to be available soon for travel to Bengaluru Airport

Passengers will be able to travel to the halt station near Kempegowda International Airport using Memu trains soon.

The newly electrified Yelahanka-Devanahalli-Chikkaballapur section 45 km was inspected on Saturday by Abhai Kumar Rai, commissioner of railway safety (southern circle).

An South Western Railway (SWR) official told the media that the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) inspection was completed, as well as a speed trial at the full sectional speed of 100 km per hour.

The route's electrification will primarily benefit airport passengers, as SWR will be able to run Mainline electric multiple units (Memu) trains to and from the halt station. The KSR Bengaluru City-Yelahanka line is already wired.

The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) built halt station is 3.5 km from the airport terminal and is expected to benefit nearly 28,000 employees and passengers.

The cost of the ticket is between Rs 10-15. However, due to the low frequency of Diesel-electric multiple unit (Demu) services, patronage of these airport-bound trains is low.

Devanahalli-Yelahanka is still a single-track section that needs to be doubled to operate additional trains to and from the KIA halt station.

MEMUs are electric multiple unit (EMU) trains on Indian Railways that serve short and medium-distance routes in India, as opposed to regular EMU trains that connect cities and suburbs. Mainline Electric Multiple Unit is the abbreviation for this term.
