Delhi Plans Ropeway Connectivity
Delhi Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena has instructed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to initiate a survey and identify feasible sites for the construction of ropeways or cableways across the Yamuna River, according to a statement from Raj Niwas. The DDA has been directed to provide a preliminary report within a month.
The proposed project aims to operate cable cars with a capacity of around 50 passengers each, running from morning to night, offering an eco-friendly mode of transport. The installations will be strategically placed near metro stations on both sides of the Yamuna to ensure accessibility while preserving the floodplain environment by avoiding encroachment or concretisation.
The Lieutenant Governor emphasised that the initiative will not only promote public transport usage but also encourage walking, fostering physical activity amidst daily schedules. The ropeways are expected to reduce reliance on pollution-causing vehicles like buses, autos, and private cars, alleviating road congestion and contributing to cleaner air. Additionally, the project will shorten travel distances between residential and commercial areas, saving travel time and further reducing traffic. In areas such as Baansera and Asita, where the DDA has developed green spaces along the Yamuna, parking is intentionally kept at a distance to promote walking and fitness, reinforcing the sustainable and health-conscious ethos of the project.Related Stories
