CMRL opens two stations in Phase-1 extension
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has opened the Wimco Nagar and Thiruvottiyur Theradi depot stations in the Phase-1 extension between Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar for the public use. The CMRL told the media that passengers have access to the parking area for their vehicles (two-wheelers and four-wheelers) in Wimco Nagar Depot station free of cost till March 31. The work for the Phase-1 extension started a year ago and is finally opened for public use. The metro line Phase-I covers a distance of 45 km and includes two corridors Washermanpet-Chennai Airport and Chennai Central-St Thomas Mount. According to a CMRL report, on March 11, over two lakh people used the metro rail. A few weeks ago, CMRL announced that it has partnered with cab aggregator Uber and bike-taxi service Rapido to improve the last-mile connection for metro rail passengers. In the beginning, the Uber services would be available at Alandur, Egmore, Koyambedu, Guindy, and Thirumangalam metro stations. It would also give ground support at these particular stations to ensure riders have access to their services constantly. Similarly, the Rapido bike taxi would provide last-mile connectivity at 22 metro stations. The Chennai Metro is the fourth-longest metro system in the country after Delhi Metro, Hyderabad, and Namma Metro. In 2015, the system first began its services. Image Source
