Chennai's Kasimedu Harbour Modernisation Nears Completion
Chennai’s Kasimedu Fishing Harbour is undergoing a Rs 1.27 billion modernisation project set for completion by mid-2025. Initially approved in April 2022, the project faced delays due to environmental clearance, which was granted in May 2024. As of February 14, 2025, 45% of the work has been completed.
Funded under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and Sagarmala scheme, the project is being executed in two phases—Rs 1.16 billion for Phase 1 and Rs 106 billion for Phase 2—covering 18 key upgrades.
The development includes a high-tech ship lift facility for efficient boat repairs, improved roads, security, and parking, along with a modern fish handling shed, sanitary complexes, and a solid-liquid waste management system. Dredging to a depth of 4.5 meters will accommodate larger boats, while a vessel monitoring system will enhance safety. The facelift is expected to boost the fishing community’s livelihood and strengthen Chennai’s maritime sector.
